The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission or JMEC is extremely saddened and outraged by the reports of rape and sexual assaults against women and girls, which allegedly occurred in Bentiu, Rubkona County, in Unity State.

Report by Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements and Verification Mechanism or CTSAMVM says that the incident occurred around November 19th to 29th, 2018 in the south of Bentiu.

In a press release, JMEC strongly condemns what it calls ”this cruel and terrible attack on defenseless women and girls on their way to relief centers which was reportedly carried out by masked men in uniform”.

JMEC calls upon the government to conduct a speedy, transparent and timely investigation into the attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.

It also calls for full access and support to Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism or CTSAMVM to complete the investigation.

Last week, medical charity MSF reported that about 150 women and girls were raped and sexually assaulted by armed men in military uniforms within a ten day period.
