UN Mission in South Sudan plans to boost forces in Kodok by establishing a new base to support peace building in the area. This is a move to encourage civilians to return.
Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, Mr. David Shearer says the UN is facing logistical challenges in transporting heavy equipment.
Shearer says his organization will work in full cooperation with humanitarian partners to re-establish services in communities rather than continuing to use POCs as a hub for delivering aid and housing.
He however says, the agency is committed to moving as quickly as possible and is grateful that they have the full support of the authorities on the ground.
Shearer acknowledges that one of their greatest challenges is finding land for people in the POCs to build their homes and return as the land has been illegally occupied by others.
The UN head urges government to ensure the homes of people in POC’s are vacated for them to move in with their families.
The UNMISS chief made the remarks during a press conference held at the UNMISS compound in Juba.
