A big number of students of Rumbek University for Science and Technology or RUST on Saturday took to streets of the town protesting the killing of two of their colleagues.
The victims killed on Saturday road ambushed were Baden Kur Riek Dor in University of Rumbek and Majok Malual Manyiel of Upper Nile University.
Gum Makur Gum, RUST Students Unions says they marched on streets of Rumbek demonstrating to show their anger due to the killing of innocent students.
The demonstrators condemn the incident, saying ‘killing of innocents people is a bad culture that will destroy the future of this great Lakes region’, he says.
‘There will be no future in this country if we continue killing educated people who are meant to serve the nation, Gum adds.
Western Lakes State Minister of Information Majak Isaac Roor Magok confirms killing of two students and wounding of one soldier along Rumbek–Yirol road between Aluak-luak and Akot.
He pledges that the governments in two states are working together in order to apprehend the culprits in order to calm down the situation.
Minister Isaac appeals to the families of the deceased to remains calm as the two government works to bring the criminals to book.
He extends state government’s condolences to the families of the deceased, which he describes as a great lost not only to the two families, but the whole nation.
Eastern Lakes State Information Minister Taban Abel Guek also confirms that about 20 armed youth were reported to have ambushed a pick up car between Aluak-luak and killed two students leaving one seriously injured.
He explains that the suspected criminals’ foot marks were followed to a place in Mayom Cuei where footprints ended.
Three people were arrested in connection to the incidents because the suspects’ footprints were found passing nearby the houses of those arrested, Taban adds.
He appeals for calm and no revenge attempt from the deceased relatives as the two governments are working to bring the perpetrators to face justice in the court.
‘The holding interstates dialogue which will commence soon in Lakes region will help in addressing security issues between the borders of sisterly states’, he adds.
The tension of revenge killings between sisterly states of Eastern and Western Lakes has brought a number of people killed to 15 from both sides within October 2018.
