United Nations World Food Programme or WFP has confirmed its river convoy reaching isolated areas in Ulang County in the Greater Upper Nile region.
WFP says in a press release that it is able to send boats carrying humanitarian food assistance up to the Sobat River, a major tributary of the White Nile for the first time since the conflict broke out in 2013.
It states that the process required negotiating access and gaining security guarantees to allow safe passage for the vessels which have brought life-saving supplies to tens of thousands of displaced people in Ulang
The river convoy, composed of one barge and eleven smaller vessels, transported over seven hundred and fifty metric tons of food and nutrition supplies.
The supplies include sorghum, pulses, vegetable oil and a nutritious porridge blend enough to sustain forty thousand people for one month.
The cargo vessels took one week to reach Ulang County from Renk where it was loaded.
According to latest findings of a new Integrated Food Security Phase Classification or IPC report over six million people more than half the population of the country face severe food shortages.
