The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa or AMECEA Bishops will continue praying for the quick resolution of the conflict so as to alleviate the suffering of the people and end the loss of innocent lives in South Sudan.
In a communiqué issued on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Catholic Bishops in the region pledge willingness to offer necessary help that will contribute to lasting peace in South Sudan.
They ask Catholic faithful and people of good will to remember South Sudan in their prayers and attend with a helping hand to their urgent needs.
The Catholic leaders in AMECEA region say their hearts are gladdened by the progress in the South Sudan peace talks.
In another news development, AMECEA elected Bishop Charles Joseph Sampa Kasonde of Solwezi Diocese in Zambia its new chairman.
It also appointed Fr Anthony Makunde of Mbeya Diocese, Tanzania as the new Secretary-General of the Association during election on Saturday.
Outgoing Chairman Cardinal Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel made the announcement on Monday morning.
Fr Makunde is taking over from Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo of Kakamega Diocese, Kenya who served two terms as Secretary-General of the Association.
Cardinal Berhaneyesus also announced the appointment of Fr Stephen Mbugua, from Nakuru Diocese, Kenya as the new Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
Fr Mbugua takes over from Justus Mbae, from Kenya who is finishing his mandate as a Vice Chancellor.
