Torit Wildlife authority confirmed to Radio Emmanuel that the state has registered the killing of fifteen dogs in the ongoing exercise meant to free town off untamed dogs.
Brigadier Paulino Oliha Diromoi, Deputy Director of Wildlife says they are using sticks and canes to get rid of the roaming dogs in the town,
He adds that some more measures may still be developed to kill the animals.
Brigadier Oliha affirms that the presence of the wild dogs in town threatens lives of citizens specially school children.
‘Yeah we have killed about 15 that is why we stopped a bit so that we can join together with health partners so that whenever we kill some they can as health authority identify where they can be taken to, so that their smell should not disturb people, yes we have seen many dogs moving around the town if we use the guns to killed them they may escape out and stay in the bush and if someone crosses there it will still bit that is why we started with sticks and if we see they are aware of sticks we can use other means like using any poison for killing them’, the officer elaborates.
Brigadier Oliha believes that many dogs roaming around the town of Torit came from villages.
He encourages the dog owners to keep their dogs at home to avoid blames when killed.
‘These dogs now we have learnt that they have a lot of effects to the people and causes losses from bites and getting its medicine for the victims of the bites is expensive. These are the things people cry about the presence of the dogs in town. Many of these dogs in Torit are not born in Torit; some of these dogs came from villages. When they come here and smell something good in the town and comparing it to that in the village, when it comes and smell something like onion or something where the meat is present, it will not go back to the village, it will think this place is good. These are the things that attract a lot of dogs to the town’, he notes.
The Wildlife officer was speaking to Radio Emmanuel at his office in an interview in Torit town.
