The Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan is calling for urgent safe shelter and other relief assistance to the IDPs in Tombura State.
Alain Noudehou made the appeal after visiting Tombura on Thursday to witness an influx of 18,000 IDPs following escalation of fighting in the surrounding areas.
The delegation that visited the area included OCHA, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNMISS, WFP and World Vision.
The Coordinator says he and Tombura Governor agreed that the IDPs’ needs cannot be neglected due to challenges according to the international humanitarian law.
He notes that women in Tombura shared their hope that the high-level peace talks currently ongoing will lead to an immediate ceasefire.
They lack shelter, food and water and also expressed their desire to return home when fighting stops.
The UN leadership in South Sudan has serious concerns about the deteriorating situation in Tombura, Noudehou stresses.
He calls on all sides to facilitate safe access for humanitarian assistance in order that aid workers can provide crucial assistance to displaced populations.
The Coordinator expresses commitment to support partners to provide further assistance based on need including the delivery of vital supplies.
