There is progress made by the parties in the South Sudan peace negotiations in Addis Ababa. This is according to a press release issued by the regional body, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, or IGAD.
The group quoted a statement from the South Sudan Council of Churches at the plenary which states that some progress has been made and the spirit is positive, even as the committee members begin tackling issues.
‘The parties have committed to silence the guns while the process and momentum are maintained’ it stressed.
The South Sudan Council of Churches appealed to ‘all parties to avoid negative statements and to strictly abide by the Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access’.
These consultations are conducted in two separate and inclusive working groups along Governance and Security issues that have been outstanding since the last meeting of February 2018.
On the contrary, parties in the sub-committees of governance and security arrangements say little progress has been achieved.
The IGAD-led High Level Forum for the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan was signed in August 2015,
