Minister calls on partners to support farmers in Torit

Torit State Minister of Agriculture calls on the government and Non-governmental organizations to provide farmers with agricultural tools.
 
Clement Laku Chichim stresses need for massive cultivation to increase agricultural production. Emmanuel Radio reports.
 
He appeals to partners to provide varieties of short term seeds to farmers.
 
‘We are going for massive cultivation and we need to have tools for our people. Our partners in food security, the main thing that will improve food production is by supporting our farmers with agricultural tools. We have to provide them with different varieties especially the short term seeds that can yield within short period.’
 
Minister Laku regrets that the State has been experiencing insecurity that has persistently affected farmers from producing enough food.
 
He assures farmers of improved security in the state.
 
Torit Project Coordinator and Head of Food and Agricultural Organization, FAO, Mezbanur Rahman, applauds the people for their tireless effort in reducing hunger.
 
Rahman says FAO is ready to support farmers to ensure massive food production in the state.
 
‘I would like to appreciate the people of Torit state, including the farmers for working hard to reduce hunger. FAO is here to support you jointly with the ministry of agriculture to produce more food in Torit state’. says Rahman.
 
He urges farmers to make proper use of the rainy season.
 
Chairperson of Chameleon Mix group, CMG, Emil Silver raises concerns that farmers groups in Torit always receive insufficient support and late provision of seeds.
 
‘We don’t have enough agricultural tools like gumboots and sometimes late distribution of seeds. This is the challenge we are facing and also pests are destroying our crops in the field’.
 
Silver urges citizens not to rely on humanitarian aid but engage in cultivation to reduce dependency.
 
The speakers were talking during agricultural campaign at Torit Freedom square.
 
The campaign was organized by Food and Agricultural Organization in collaboration with the state ministry of Agriculture under the theme; ‘Time for a Hunger Free Nation, Put Farming First’.
