Headmaster of Saint Bakhita Primary School says some girls in Tonj State have dropped out of school because of poor performance in class.
Samuel Madraca told Don Bosco Radio that the girls did not understand what they were taught in class, leading to poor performance.
He adds that lack of monitoring the performance of pupils by their teachers at schools also leads to poor results.
‘Girls are giving up just because in the school, they are getting nothing. For instance, in a class the girls may not understand and they are always shy just because boys are there. Some are picking very first and teachers do not take care of the slow learners’.
The headmaster advises parents to encourage and check the books of their daughters when they return home to know their weaknesses or progress.
Madraca appeals to the teachers to work hard so that everybody performs well at school.
‘Teachers have to help girls when they are in problem. If they fear, it is good to have senior woman teacher in a school which is very important. There are certain cases where male teachers cannot handle and the girls may not tell them their problems’.
Nansi Abur, one of the students from the same school says some female students face challenges during school time.
‘If a girl is growing up and the parents do not give her money for buying her needs, especially for menstruation period and if she doesn’t have soap, she may remain at home’.
The speakers made the remarks on Friday during an interview with Don Bosco Radio.
