Alleged sexual abuse in Wau ‘unfortunate’, says German Ambassador

The German Ambassador to South Sudan criticizes the alleged sexual abuse in Wau POC site by UNMISS’ Ghanaian police.
 
Jan Hendrik Van Thiel describes it as ‘very bad, unfortunate criminal act which should not happen again’.
 
He says as a donor community, they do not like any kind of scandal involving UN anymore.
 
Hendrik calls for good system of monitoring and action to abuses.
 
The Ambassador appreciates the UN Mission in South Sudan for reacting positively to the exploitation.
 
Mahimbo Mdoe, UNICEF Country representative warns that the organization has a zero tolerance policy on sexual exploitation.
 
He appreciate that the case is under investigation and that UNICEF will continue to build trust in people and work with them.
 
The officials were reacting to the alleged sexual abuse in Wau.
 
Earlier, UNMISS said it received a complaint from women last month, alleging that the UN police are engaged in sexual activity with displaced women.
 
UNMISS says the Office of Internal Oversight Services, an independent office within the UN would investigate the scandal.
 
But South Sudan government has called for the establishment of independent body to look into the allegations of the sexual exploitation by UNMISS’ Ghanaian police in Wau.
