The World Health Organization or WHO pledges to provide cholera vaccines to South Sudan to combat further spread and outbreaks of the disease.

It disclosed receiving 500 thousand doses of the vaccines for a planned campaign between July 28 and August 3 in Tonj East, Kapoeta South, North and East, Radio Bakhita reports.

WHO says 17 thousand cholera cases including 320 deaths were reported in 24 counties in South Sudan since June 2016.

It says successful oral cholera vaccine campaign will make difference in controlling the outbreak.

The agency says it is helping South Sudan to control cholera through harness strategies to improve access to care, observation, mobilization, water and sanitation.

WHO attributes the rise in cholera cases to use of contaminated water and food insecurity in South Sudan.
