The United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS on Thursday trained Journalists and human rights defenders on promotion and protection of rights in Yambio of Gbudue State.
Journalists serve as watch dogs or regulators and give accurate information to the society, says Stella Oboyoni, Western Equatoria UNMISS Acting Head of Office, Radio Anisa reports.
She advises journalist to gather and verify information by conducting several interviews and visiting the scene of the event to avoid being bias.
The Acting Head of Office tells Journalists that their profession comes with legal responsibility and that every media personnel must follow the law.
She calls on media practitioners to exercise accurate and balanced reporting.
Victor Ndukpo, Director-General of Gbudue State Information says the role of the government is to provide a favorable environment for journalists to operate.
The government of South Sudan has put in place laws to guide journalists’ operations in the country, he adds.
The Director-General advises Journalists to be very careful when reporting on human rights violations.
Ndukpo reveals that currently, the government does not have money to organize training for journalists, but advocates to partners to train them.
Journalists and human rights defenders mention freedom expression as the main challenge in the State and South Sudan.
