Humanitarian Coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Wau has confirmed that the town is relatively calm after heavy gunfire on Monday.

Fr Moses Peter told Radio Bakhita that normalcy returned to the area after national security intervention.

He says the security agents reach the area to protect civilians and open way for many people to seek protection in IDP camps and churches.

Fr Peter says people have started opening their businesses, checking their property and houses.

The Coordinator explains that sixteen civilians are suspected dead and many others injured.

According to Fr Moses, the armed men dressed in uniforms alongside cattle herders have carried out the attack in the town.

Reuters quoted UN Spokesperson Stephanie Dujarric, saying two peacekeeping patrols had been sent to the area on Monday and more were expected on Tuesday.

He says eighty-four people have arrived at the protection of civilians’ site in Wau, while at least 3,000 have reportedly moved to the Catholic Church, mostly women and children.
