Air drops is the last option to deliver supplies of food to the hungry people due to the ongoing conflict in many parts of South Sudan, including Maar, in Jonglei region, says International Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC.

ICRC says the conflict has made more efficient deliveries by road impossible.

The statement explains that ICRC is dropping tonnes of food aid to thousands of displaced civilians and host communities, following UN declaration of famine in parts of South Sudan.

Lang Biliu of South Sudan Red Cross, who is on the ground helping to distribute the supplies explains, those who fled conflict had money, but cannot find food as commodities are not there in markets.

Every time an airdrop happens, thousands gather, waiting patiently for what is sometimes their first real food in days, Biliu adds.

The ICRC began food drops to Maar in March this year, aiming to reach 20 thousand people.
