There are 513 inmates who are stranded in Juba Central Prison due to delays in legal proceedings, says South Sudan Prison Service Acting Director-General.
Lieutenant General Semir Khamis Suleiman says accumulation of cases in the judiciary has caused great congestion in the prison, Radio Bakhita reports.
He calls on the Judiciary of South Sudan to speed up trial of suspects to reduce overcrowding in the prisons.
Khamis adds that over 60 young inmates are currently being held together with adults at the facility.
The Acting Director-General calls on donors to support establishment of reformatory centres for juvenile prisoners.
Undersecretary in the Ministry of Justice, Jeremiah Swaka, says they are speeding up investigation of pending cases.
Many of the inmates in the prison are waiting for trial.
