The Chairperson of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan or UJOSS condemns the unlawful detention of journalists at Dr John Garang Mausoleum.

Oliver Modi Philip says the detention of the journalists is a denial of access to information which is against the law, Radio Bakhita reports.

He says journalists have a responsibility to inform the public about the health care service being offered to the people of South Sudan by the Moroccan government.

Chairperson Modi says some individuals in the security sector who harassed journalists in public events are unaware of the media laws of the country.

About five Journalists including a Radio Bakhita reporter were arrested and briefly detained this month while covering free mobile medical services offered by the Moroccan government at Dr John Garang Mausoleum.

The journalists express disappointment and frustration over the security authorities’ actions.

They say security official at the facility treated them like criminals by searching their recording equipment, cameras and their pockets.
