Europe needs to turn waste into raw materials to reduce its dependence on imported materials including precious metals, says a European official.

Shadow Rapporteur, Karl-Heinz Florenz says the European Parliament’s Environment Committee has approved legislation requiring EU Member States to recycle up to 80 percent of their wastes by 2030.

Observers describe the move as an important step towards creating a recycling, circular economy.

On the contrary, the move will reduce Africa’s exports overseas as the main supplier of raw materials to Europe.
