Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in partnership with CARITAS Torit conducted humanitarian assessment and confirm that 52 lepers in Hawaii Messer Boma in Nyong Payam of Torit County are in need of assistance.
The assessment, conducted a leper colony of Ibalany and Lokondo on Tuesday, did not indicate new cases of leprosy emerging in the area, Radio Emmanuel reported.
The aim of the evaluation was to identify people who are still living with leprosy, says Odongi Dario, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Eastern Equatoria States.
Dario Oker, a 65-year-old man and chairman of people living with leprosy, said since got the disease, life has been difficult because they are often isolated and neglected from getting basic assistance.
Cecilia Idongi is a 67-year-old woman and a mother of six children who suffered from leprosy since her childhood, said the virus had crippled all her fingers and toes.
