Western Equatoria region has the highest HIV rate in South Sudan, says Medicines Sans Frontiers or MSF.

The organization says the region shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic, where HIV rates are usually higher.

This came on Wednesday when MSF released statement before World AIDS Day celebration on Thursday.

MSF warns that cross-border areas infection risks can be quite high with population being crossing borders regularly as they go about their business.

‘In over a year, MSF provided 336 patients with treatment and many did not know they were HIV positive before test, explains Daniele Regazzi, Project Coordinator in Yambio.

He says MSF was running a pioneering project to improve access of rural communities to HIV/AIDS test and care to those found positive.

Regazzi explains that over a year, more than ten thousand were tested for HIV, 414 found positive and 330 undergo treatment.

The Coordinator discloses that MSF is setting up an adaptable network among villages of Western Equatoria in case they are cut off.
