The United States of America on Thursday urged the UN Security Council to impose arms embargo on South Sudan after Ban Ki-moon warned that the country could go into genocide.

US Ambassador in UN Samantha Power said will present a draft resolution to the Council in the coming days to ban weapons sales to the young country and impose sanctions on individuals spoiling the peace process.

“South Sudan is a nation at the precipice,” she told the Council.

Ambassador Power said months of talks with South Sudan’s leaders failed to persuade them to opt for peace.

‘There is no good reason why we would not deprive those who have shown a willingness to commit mass atrocities’, she stresses.

Britain and France backed the proposed arms embargo, but Russia reaffirmed its opposition and China expressed reservations.
