About 280 thousand children under five years in Gok, Western and Eastern Lakes States are targeted in the polio campaign launched on Tuesday in Rumbek.

EPI State Director Simon Makoi says the children will receive polio vaccine, vitamin A and albendazole supplements, Radio Good News reported.

He explains that vitamin A prevents blindness while albendazole tablets are used to de-worm children.

UNICEF Representative Emmanuel Gai Mabor urges EPI Manager and his team to take advantage of the dry season to cover areas inaccessible during the wet period.

He advises parents to make use of routine immunization services available at health centers, instead of waiting for national immunization days to vaccinate their children.

Director-General of Western Lakes Ministry of Health, Michael Mading, calls for cooperation between vaccinators and state authorities to reach all children in the three states

The polio vaccination campaign will run for four days and another round is reportedly scheduled for December.
