The United Nations Secretary-General has criticized South Sudanese leaders of having ‘betrayed their people’ by pursuing a violent path to power.
Ban Ki-moon in his final address to the world leaders on Wednesday in New York condemned outside powers of supporting the warring parties on both sides of the South Sudanese conflict.
He said UN sees leaders rewriting constitutions, manipulating elections and taking other desperate steps to cling to power.
The Secretary-General urged all countries to cooperate with the UN’s human rights arm to not put obstacles in the path humanitarian workers.
He called on the nations to work with UN and not to threaten its envoys and staff when they raise difficult issues.
‘We must all be open and accountable to the people we serve,’ said the UN Chief.
Ki-moon called on all political leaders not to engage in the dangerous politics of dividing people and multiplying fear.
The Secretary-General urged the world to ‘stand up against lies and distortions of truth, and reject all forms of discrimination.’
