UN Refugee Agency or UNHCR and the government of Uganda are responding to cholera among South Sudan refugees in Adjumani District following confirmation of an outbreak.

UNHCR in a statement on Thursday said 49 South Sudan refugees and one Ugandan have been confirmed with the disease.

It added that 44 were provided with treatment and discharged from health facilities after recovery, while two patients remain in quarantine.

Majority of people found suffering from cholera are in reception centres in Pagirinya and Elegu collection point.

Acting Representative to Uganda Bornwell Kantande says they received a large number of children from South Sudan last month vulnerable to the killer disease.

He says decongestion of transit and reception centres remain a top priority.
