UN Secretary-General announced a special investigation into allegations that the South Sudan peacekeeping mission did not respond to last month’s attack on a hotel by uniformed men who executed a journalist and raped civilians.
Ban Ki-moon spokesman in a statement on Tuesday said the investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents and evaluate the mission’s overall response’.
He said the Secretary-General is ‘concerned’ by accusations that the peacekeepers did not react ‘to prevent the grave cases of sexual violence committed in Juba.
South Sudan’s army spokesman, Lul Ruai Koang, earlier said the military takes accusations of sexual violence ‘very seriously.’
The UN Human Rights Chief, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, said earlier this month that violations continue to increase, though the government says it established courts to try soldiers.
