UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict urged IGAD to pressurize the government of South Sudan to address sexual violence crimes.
Zainab Hawa Bangura in a statement on Wednesday calls for an investigation into the alleged sexual violence crimes recently committed in the country.
She urged IGAD to request the South Sudanese authorities to take immediate measures to prevent their troops from committing crimes and take action against those responsible.
Hawa said military and political leadership of South Sudan should implement their commitments to prevent and respond to sexual violence crimes.
The Representative told IGAD to use its power over the parties to this conflict to ensure that they immediately cease, prevent and respond to serious crimes.
IGAD must clearly stress the need for accountability, in line with the Peace Agreement of August 2015, she emphasized.
