Thousands of people on Thursday demonstrated in the streets of Rumbek protesting African Union or AU proposal to deploy peacekeeping troops to add force to United Nations Mission or UNMISS in South Sudan.

The marching started from Rumbek Freedom Square to the UNMISS office where civil society organisations read out a petition and handed over to the Mission State Coordinator, Radio Good News reports.

The demonstrators were chanting ‘No, no, foreign troops, we don’t want foreign troops, and yes, yes for peace’

The petition states that citizens do not want foreign troops in the country.

UNMISS State Coordinator comments the citizens for staging a peaceful demonstration for their voices to be heard by the international community.

He promises that he will deliver the petition to the appropriate authorities.

The decision to deploy more troops to South Sudan followed the recent fighting between SPLA and SPLA-IO in Juba and other parts of the country.
