Thousands of people on Wednesday marched in the streets of Juba protesting against African Union or AU proposal to deploy regional troops as additional peacekeeping force to UNMI Mission in South Sudan.

The demonstration started from Dr John Garang Mausoleum to the UN Mission in South Sudan where the leaders handed a petition to UNMISS, Radio Bakhita reports.

The demonstrators were chanting ‘down, down UNMISS’.

According to the AU plan, forces drawn from Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda are to join the UNMISS peacekeeping contingent of 12 thousand troops.

The decision to deploy more troops to South Sudan followed the recent fighting between SPLA and SPLA-IO in Juba and other parts of the country.
