UN Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO and its partners distributed crop seeds and tools to one hundred and eighty thousand households in South Sudan.

About 1.1 million people are benefitting from the service, FAO says in a statement.

The farmers received the seeds ahead of the planting season to allow them enough time for proper land preparation and planting.

It adds that many families have low seed reserves, either because they were unable to plant last year or because of a low harvest.

The low seeds reduced their incomes and lowered their purchasing power.

In some cases, families were forced to consume or sell their seeds for food, says Serge Tissot, FAO Representative in South Sudan.
