Citizens and leaders in Kauda of Heiban County in Nuba Mountains on Wednesday celebrated African Child Day.
The Day is celebrated on June 16 after the Organization of African Unity initiated it to honour children killed in Soweto uprising in South Africa in 1976, Radio Voice of Peace reported.
Nuba Mountains commemorated the Day five days late because of involvement in other activities.
The Secretary for Child Welfare in the region, Ekram Abeid said the ceremony was to honour all Nuba marginalised children whose lives are restricted.
She said children in the Nuba Mountains experience a lot of suffering including losing lives and lacking education like many others across Africa.
Ms Abeid explained that the celebration was meant to stop the suffering of children and encourage educating many of them.
She criticized lack of gender equality in children’s education where boys are sent to school while girls are left at home to help mothers with domestic work.
Nuba Mountains Governor’s representative, Tau Kanjla, expressed SPLM-N commitment to ensure protection and freedom of children.
He stated that child right has been stipulated in the SPLM-N’s Constitution.
