Netherlands meets South Sudan over justice on war crimes

The Vice Minister for International Cooperation of Netherlands is in Juba to discuss with Transitional Government the implementation of the peace deal chapter on truth, reconciliation, healing, justice and accountability.
 
Christian Rebergen says human rights’ violations must be accounted for.
 
He expresses the Netherlands’ readiness to support South Sudan to improve the rule of law and promote justice.
 
Justice Minister, Paulino Wanawilla Unango, says Netherlands has been assisting the government in capacity building for several decades through the United Nations Development Programme.
 
He appeals for continuous assistance for the implementation of the peace agreement as far as justice is concerned.
 
The Human Rights Watch documented over 60 cases of killings of individuals during two-year conflict which amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
 
Other human rights’ violations include mass arrests, unlawful detention of hundreds of men in poor conditions, ill-treatment and torture of civilians.
