Sacred Heart Parish Tonj of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek plans to conduct the first Marian Congress from May 19 to 24, under the theme: ‘Mary Mother of Mercy’.

Parish Priest John Peter says the assembly aims at honoring Mother Mary for her protection to people of South Sudan from many difficulties, Radio Don Bosco reports.

The priest adds that South Sudan is facing a lot of problems and they can only be overcome if people trust in Mary.

Fr Peter explains that the congress is expecting participants from all the 16 chapels of Tonj and parishes of Wau, Mapal and Rumbek.

He adds that two priests will come from Nairobi and two others from Juba to facilitate the assembly.

The Parish Priest says on May 24 the congress will conclude with a big celebration marking the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He adds that the celebration will witness reception of Sacraments of Matrimony, Confirmation, First Communion, Baptism and inauguration of the Daughters of Mary.

500 people are preparing themselves for the congress in addition to other parishioners.
