Student doctors deployed in all referral hospitals have gone on strike over pay dispute with the national Ministry of Health.
More than 60 medical students training in South Sudan’s referral hospitals put down their tools last Friday, Radio Bakhita reports.
Thomas Thiik, a representative of the medical students says they took decision the Ministry of Health failed to pay them for nearly five months and threatened them on top.
Thiik says the current economic crisis makes it difficult to continue serving without pay.
Thiik says they are open for further discussion with the authorities to meet their minimum demands to serve in the hospitals.
John Chol, the Director of Juba Teaching Hospital says the Ministry of Health has no obligation to pay the students because there is no contract between the two.
Director Chol advises the students to resume duties while they dialogue with the Ministry of Health.
Radio Bakhita could not reach the Ministry of Health for comments about the strike by press time.
