United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS plans to open temporary operating bases in Mundri or Wau Shilluk to allow the Mission to reach local communities outside of the protection of civilian sites.

The aim of establishing temporary operating bases is to instil a sense of security through a military presence, Ariane Quentier, UNMISS Spokesperson told the press on Wednesday.

She said another reason is to support the delivery of humanitarian assistance and services and enable communities to stay in their homes.

UNMISS’ presence beyond the protection sites is part of efforts to establish a greater sense of security among the population, said the Spokesperson.

Temporary operating bases are military structures and not Protection of Civilians sites or IDP camps, she adds.
