The United States’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations this week singled out President Yoweri Museveni as a risk to Uganda’s future stability due to his worsening repressive behaviour among the leaders of the Great Lakes region.

Ambassador Samantha Power says there are democratic reversals and increasing repression in Uganda after critical contribution to regional peace and generous refugee policy, The Daily Monitor reports.

Power says President Museveni’s actions break the rule of law and put in danger Uganda’s democratic progress, future stability and prosperity.

Uganda Media Centre Deputy Executive Director, Colonel Shaban Bantariza questioned why the US has repeatedly ignored Uganda government’s explanation that Dr Kizza Besigye’s movement is being restricted because of his declared intention to cause civil disobedience through defiance campaign.

President Museveni was declared winner of the February 18 elections with 60.7 percent, but his closest rival, the Forum for Democratic Change party flag bearer, Dr Kizza Besigye rejected the results as deception.
