The Acting Chairperson of South Sudan Human Rights Commission has urged the legislature to abolish the National Security Act 2014 which suppresses freedom in the country.
Speaking during media stakeholder meeting in Juba, Nyuol Justin Yaack says the current National Security Act allows individuals to abuse the law and suppress freedom of expression, Radio Bakhita reports.
Some provisions of the law violate the Bill of Rights in the Transitional Constitution, 2011 and even Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he says.
Journalists should exercise professionalism to avoid falling in trouble, he advises.
The media stakeholder forum seeks to create conducive atmosphere for media workers to promote freedom of expression in the country, says David De Dau, the Executive Director of Agency for Independent Media.
Meanwhile, Paul Jacob, the Director General in the Ministry of Information urges the media and civil society organizations to form a training body to build the capacity of journalists.
The one-day event brought together representatives from the security, government, civil society and media.
