Parliament rejects International Covenant on civil and political rights

Members of the National Parliament on Monday objected the adoption of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1996.
 
Speaker Manasseh Magok Rundial says Committees of Human Rights and that of Legislation and Justice need to clarify confusion and reports in the Convention, Radio Bakhita reports.
 
The political situation in the country is unfavorable to adopt the Convention, MP Zakaria Matur Makuer tells lawmakers.
 
MP Aleu Aney Aleu says there is need to consider the financial burdens the Covenant will put on South Sudan.
 
He calls for consultations with the Ministry of Finance to review economic implications of after adopting the Covenant.
 
The Covenant seeks to abolish death penalty and individual reporting of human rights abuses to rights defenders.
