Out of 22 countries affected by conflict, South Sudan has the highest percentage of out-of-school children in the world, says UNICEF.

51 percent of primary and lower secondary school children are not accessing education says, Jonathan Veitch UNICEF Representative in South Sudan.

Education continues to be one of the least funded sectors in humanitarian appeals, he observes.

Mr Veitch says UNICEFs’ appeal in 2015 was just 31 percent funded.

Unless the provision of education in emergencies is prioritized, a generation of children living in conflict will grow up without skills to contribute to their country and economy, he warns.

Mr Veitch adds that without increased funding, UNICEF cannot support the huge number of children presently out-of-school.

He states that education is the smartest investment for a peaceful and prosperous nation.

The two years of violence worsened the situation, forcing over four hundred thousand more children out of school.
