As South Sudan economic crisis worsens, the European Commission releases 20 million Euros as humanitarian assistance.

EU in statement on Monday, says the funds will be used for urgent food aid and basic emergency health services.

‘The suffering of the people of South Sudan is beyond imagination’, says Christos Stylianides, the European Union Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid.

He says South Sudan is now on the edge of famine.

It is crucial that humanitarian access is granted and lifesaving aid provided urgently, Stylianides says.

Four million people are estimated to be severely food insecure.

The new funding brings EU’s total humanitarian aid for South Sudanese to 165 million Euros this year.
