United Nations or UN Security Council has extended its peace mission in South Sudan until December 15, 2015 with the mandate to deter violence against civilians or foreign nationals through proactive deployment and active patrolling with particular attention to Internally Displaced Persons or IDPs.
The new mandate under Chapter 7, Resolution 2214 authorizes the implementation of a mission-wide early warning strategy including coordinated approach to information gathering, monitoring, verification, early warning and dissemination for response mechanisms to prepare for further potential attacks on United Nations personnel and facilities.
The Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to peace, breach of peace, or act of aggression and shall make recommendations or decide what measures shall be taken to restore international peace and security.
Resolution 2214 says the UN Security Council may take intervention actions such as demonstrations or blockade by air, sea or land forces as may be necessary to restore international peace and security in member states.
