United Nations Children Fund or UNICEF warns that girls are three times more likely to die in childbirth than to complete their primary eight.
UNICEF in a statement marking the International Day of Girl Child Education on Monday predicted that the number of girls less than 18 years married each year will grow from 15 to 16.5 million in 2030 if child marriage issue is not addressed.
It points out that adolescent girls in South Sudan continue to encounter challenges including child marriage, unwanted pregnancies, sexual transmitted diseases and gender-based violence.
UNICEF laments that the 2013 conflict added risk to young girls’ through exploitation, abuse, rape and violence.
It says investing in the health and education of adolescent girls is one of the best investments in the future.
