The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department or ECHO contributed two million Euros to UNICEF Sudan to help refugees and internally displaced people in the country.

ECHO’s Operations Director Jean-Louis de Brouwer in a statement says close to 200 thousand refugees are from South Sudan and over 2.5 million acutely malnourished children countrywide are facing critical humanitarian needs in the Sudan.

The Director says the new funding enables UNICEF to supply refugees with clean water and sanitation and prevent tens of thousands of children from dying of malnutrition.

The European Commission says it remains committed to addressing the most urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan’s most complex environments.
