United Nations Children agency or UNICEF and the World Food Programme or WFP managed to get urgently needed food and nutrition assistance to thousands of people cut off from relief agencies for months due to intense insecurity in Upper Nile State.

WFP and UNICEF in a joint statement on Wednesday disclosed deploying mobile emergency relief teams to assist 27 thousand people in Wau Shilluk on the west bank of the Nile River for the first time since March.

The statement disclosed that the team finished the final food distributions on Monday.

UNICEF Representative in South Sudan Jonathan Veitch after visiting Wau Shilluk described the situation as desperate as children go without nourishing food and healthcare in those villages.

He warned that the situation inside Malakal UN base would get out of control and they would not be able to provide sufficient services and resources to children.

WFP Deputy Country Director in South Sudan Hakan Falkell said their teams reached the most internally displaced people who found refuge among host communities.

WFP East and Central Africa Regional Director Valerie Guarnieri during a visit to Wau Shilluk said they could see that people were struggling and there were only some fish and few tomatoes for sale in the market and almost nobody had the means to buy them.

He called for a stronger presence of humanitarian organizations to provide immediate food and nutrition support and reopen schools, ensure health services and support agricultural production.
