National Fistula campaign for over 40 women start in Wau

Wau Teaching Hospital authorities on Thursday opened operation theatre door for forty-three fistula patients from different states across South Sudan.
 
The Hospital Medical Director Edmond Sebit explains that they received 34 patients from Aweil, six from Tonj, three from Rumbek and the rest from Wau, Radio Voice of Hope reported.
 
United Nations Population Fund or UNFPA Program Specialist Stephen Mawa said the campaign is a joint initiative to help repair women who lost their self-esteems in the community and that this year campaign targets more 100 fistula women.
 
One of the patients Teresa Akor, who suffered for six years, express happiness that her dignity would be restored after the operation to enjoy normal life with relatives and friends.
 
This is the third fistula campaign Western Bahr El Ghazal Health ministry conduct in collaboration with UNFPA at Wau Teaching Hospital.
 
UNFPA reported that South Sudan has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates and approximately 60 thousand women and girls suffer from fistula.
