United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS has condemned fatal shooting Wednesday evening kiling an Internally Displaced Person or IDP inside the Protection of Civilians site at its compound outside Malakal.
UNMISS says it has received information that three fighters belonging to either Sudan SPLM/A in Opposition or General Johnson Olony’s forces currently controlling the Malakal fired at IDPs’ compound on Wednesday, killing one civilian and wounding six others.
The Mission adds that the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting incident remain unclear; clarifying that whatever attack on UN Protection of Civilians site constitutes a war crime.
The wounded are currently receiving treatment at UNMISS hospital inside the compound and that one is in a critical condition.
UNMISS peacekeepers are currently engaging with senior commanders of the armed opposition forces to identify the perpetrators of the attack among their own ranks.
The Mission demands the warring parties to honor obligation to ensure the safety of UN personnel in South Sudan, safety of civilians seeking shelter in UN sites and respect the inviolability of UN property.
