German Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid issued a statement condemning the expulsion of UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator Toby Lanzer from South Sudan.
Christoph Str√§sser says Mr Lanzer’s expulsion is contrary to South Sudan’s obligations to allow the provision of humanitarian assistance, describing it unacceptable.
He adds that to ensure that those in need receive life-saving support; it is essential that the work of humanitarian organizations is not hindered.
South Sudan Cabinet Affairs Minister Dr Martin Elia Lomur√∂ argues that Lanzer’s expulsion is justified because he was meddling in political affairs beyond his mandate.
He says Mr Lanzer published that South Sudan government is hiding high inflation by printing more money to save the economy from collapsing and he did not heed to earlier warnings and engagements of desisting from political issues that may escalate violence in the country.
Dr Elia accuses the former UN Humanitarian Coordinator of campaigning that South Sudan is a failed state like Somalia, Palestine, Iraq or Syria and that no responsible government could tolerate Mr Lanzer’s sentiments.
