African Union or AU Peace, Security Commission Chairperson appoints Mali former President as the High Representative for South Sudan.
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in a statement says President Alpha Oumar Konar√©’s assignment aims at strengthening the AU’s contribution towards ending South Sudan conflict and untold suffering inflicted upon the civilian population.
The Chairperson believes Konar√©’s outstanding experience as President of Mali from 1992 to 2002, AU Commission Chairperson from 2003 to 2007 and AU High Level Panel Chairperson for Egypt between 2013 and 2014 and long standing commitment to Pan Africanism would be a major asset to conflict resolution in South Sudan.
The Commission stresses robust efforts to enhance Africa’s support to Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGAD mediation of South Sudan conflict.
A high-level ad hoc committee comprising Heads of State of Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa are expected to meet in mid June in Johannesburg, South Africa on South Sudan conflict.
