The United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS condemns the fighting that erupted among internally displaced persons or IDPs last weekend at its protection-of-civilians sites in Juba.

In a statement on Tuesday UNMISS reported that one person was killed on Sunday during the violence and about 60 more were injured, causing the departure of an estimated three thousand and five hundred IDPs.

It says a domestic dispute sparked the fighting on Friday late afternoon, involving an estimated three hundred and fifty IDPs from Unity State counties of Mayom and Mayendit armed with machetes, sticks and metal bars.

UNMISS says their military and police peacekeepers intervened and contained the situation but that the clashes resumed on Saturday morning which was controlled again until the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, when fighting broke out again involving about 400 IDPs.

It says the 3,500 who gathered outside the site on Sunday left the area while under vehicle escort including military vehicles.

UNMISS reveals that it responded to a letter from the community leaders of Mayom IDPs asking for the release of their children who remained inside the Mission’s protection sites while continue to provide protection to the remaining IDPs.

Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny on Monday accuses the UN Security personnel of watching and taking pictures when the fighting was ongoing without containing the situation.
