Eastern Equatoria Parliament on Tuesday amended the State Transitional Constitution, extending its term and that of the State Governor for three years.
The Assembly chaired by Speaker Alberio Tobiolo Oromo passed the amendments Bill presented by Legislation and Legal Affairs Committee, Radio Emmanuel reported.
The committee chairperson Severino Maira Janus says the amendment was to extend the tenure of both the State Governor and the Legislative Assembly, noting that extension conforms to the National Legislative Assembly amendments.
The Assembly Chief Whip Charles Udwar observes the need to insert the word ‘current governor’ instead of only the governor.
He argues that to be specific, eliminates loopholes that would attract people to start campaigning to replace the current governor in the transition period.
The Chief Whip also observes that the National Assembly erred by omitting the term of office of the state governors during 2011 amendment of the constitution.
He says the mandate of the term of office of governors rests on the state Assemblies to amend.
The extension followed a memo State Cabinet and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ochan John Bongomin presented to the Assembly on March 31.
