United Nations Mine Action Service or UNMAS marks the ‘International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action’ designed for April 4 on Thursday, April 02 with a procession from Dr John Garang Mausoleum to Ny√∂kur√∂n Cultural Centre in Juba.
UNMAS says in a statement that ceremony is in memory of landmine and war remnants explosive victims and for raising awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication.
The statement adds that the day reminds South Sudan of the devastating effects of landmines and other explosive remnants of war.
UNMAS asserts that the annual commemoration provides an opportunity to renew their commitment to a world free from mines and remnants of war threat.
The theme for 2015 is ‘More than Mines’, signifying that mine action includes activities addressing an increasing wide range of explosive hazards, weapons, ammunition, risk education and victim assistance.
